ATOM named 10 companies to watch in NH

PORTSMOUTH — The folks at The Atom Group call themselves “digital artisans,” which may explain the Web development company’s growing stature for cutting-edge, information-age craftsmanship.

“People are experiencing unique ways of interacting with information,” said Adam Vicinus, one of the Atom Group’s co-founders, about the dramatic changes and different ways in which people use the World Wide Web in their daily lives. “There is a lot of interest and exciting work in mobile platforms. Just look what’s happened over the past six months with iPads. I think for us, the passion is about collecting, sharing and redelivering information.”

That passion for artisan-level expertise has led to an explosive growth in revenues and work, a doubling of employees in less than a year and industry recognition for the quality of its digital craftsmanship. The Atom Group found its latest and largest home on Brewery Lane and its working with clients small and large, nearby and throughout the Northeast from Maine to Washington, D.C.

Earlier this month, Business NH named The Atom Group as one of its Top 10 companies to watch, a “high-octane” business that combined strong contributions and major economic performance.

When The Atom Group was founded in April 2007 by Vicinus and co-founder Tom Herer, like many start-ups it wasn’t on any “to watch” lists. The duo — their combined first names became the company moniker — were industry veterans with extensive experience in Web production and development. But Vicinus and Herer wanted to have their own business that didn’t require regular commutes to the Boston-Cambridge area.

Before starting The Atom Group, Vicinus was commuting from his home in Hampton and said by the middle of each week he was wondering about how much time he wasn’t spending with his then 2-year-old daughter.

“This was a better cost-of-life decision,” he said about locating in Portsmouth.
